UPDATE: Macomb County, Michigan issues RFP for countywide wireless broadband

The City of Mount Clemens Downtown Development Authority is accepting sealed proposals for the first phase of a project to bring Wireless Internet Access to Macomb County beginning with Mount Clemens (population: 17,000; area: 4.2 square miles or 11 square kilometers). Macomb County is the ninth smallest of Michigan’s 83 counties (482 square miles or 1250 square kilometers), yet it ranks third in population with 825,000 residents. It is one of three counties that comprise the Detroit Metropolitan area. Mount Clemens is the seat of the county.

Macomb County Broadband Wireless Access ‚Äö?Ñ?¨ Phase I (Request for Proposal # 05-1031-01)

Phase I includes the installation and 0peration of a Wireless Broadband Network for Mount Clemens Downtown Area. Proposals will be accepted until Monday, 9 January 2006, at 2:00 PM (Local Time) at the offices of the Mount Clemens Downtown Development Authority, 49 Macomb Place, Mount Clemens, Michigan 48043.

This project was advertised in The Macomb Daily on Sunday 30 October 2005. Two additional phases are envisioned: Phase II is to scale-up the service to provide wireless connectivity to the entire City of Mount Clemens, and Phase III is to further scale-up the service to provide wireless connectivity for all of Macomb County.

The Mount Clemens DDA and the Macomb County’s Management Information Services and Planning and Economic Development Departments worked closely together to develop this Wi-Fi initiative. The first phase of the Macomb County Broadband Wireless Access project is to promote development activities in Downtown Mount Clemens, which is Macomb County’s seat of government.

Please note that the RFP pdf has two deadline dates for the Intent to Bid form (6 Nov. or 5 Dec). This form is not a strict deadline, but it enables the Development Authority to contact prospective bidders with corrections, clarifications, and/or addendums. They will accept the Intent to Bid forms at anytime prior to the Letter of Intent deadline which is 5 December 2005.

A pre-bid meeting will take place on Monday, 21 November 2005, at 2:00 pm (local time) at the Mount Clemens Downtown Development Authority offices, 49 Macomb Place, Mount Clemens, Michigan 48043.
