Going wireless on Mt. Everest

The first phase of a project bringing connectivity Qinghai-Tibet Railway and highways connecting Lhasa with base camps on Mt. Everest is complete and the government is entering Phase 2 of of the challenging deployment.The project is one in a series related to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.Comba Telecom Systems Holdings Limited, a mobile telecommunications provider in the Far East, is installing repeaters along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and a number of highways to provide travelers in Tibet with wireless coverage.

The first phase of a project bringing Qinghai-Tibet Railway and a number of highways is complete and Phase Two is in progress. Repeaters along a highways stretching from Lhasa to base camps on Mount Everest will be integrated with solar power. Twelve service spots along the highways have also been unwired.

According to Comba’s Chairman and President Tony TL Fok, “Comba is involved in a series of projects related to the Beijing Olympics including the Tibetan and Mount Everest highway projects. The highways are on the key route to the site where the Olympic flame will be lit on 18 March 2008.”
