Lincoln, UK issues RFP for Wi-Fi network

The city of Lincoln in the UK has issued a request for proposals (RFP) seeking bidders for the deployment of a wireless network that will cover the city center. Lincoln is in the eastern part of England and is best known for the gothic Lincoln Cathedral, built between 1192 and 1280.

Details of the Lincoln city wireless public tender

(1) Lincoln Business Improvement Group (BIG) has received grant money that they will use to help fund the cost of building the network: £150,000 is available for this project (exclusive of VAT).

(2) BIG does not want to own network, but rather sees this as seed money to entice a service provider to build and operate the network.

(3) In return for the investment, BIG would like a revenue share.

(4) Focus is on applications being delivered to a Wi-Fi enabled mobile phone such as two-way SMS, as well as video surveillance, video conferencing and VoIP.

(5) Coverage should invlude the area around Lincoln Cathedral.

(6) BIG has access to the mounting assets that would be required for the wireless equipment.
