Boingo acquires airport Wi-Fi operator, adds 25 airports to network

Boingo has acquired Opti-Fi Networks, a company that manages Wi-Fi networks in 25 airports in North America. Boingo now has 55 airports in its roaming network which already includes John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports in the NY area, as well as Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway, and London’s Heathrow.

Last week AT&T announced its acquisition of Wayport, which operates thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots in McDonalds and hotels. By adding thousands of hotspots to its network AT&T can provide free Wi-Fi service to iPhone users and decrease the number of people using the 3G network.

Boingo’s service is not free, but by paying a reasonable monthly subscription ($21.95), you have access to thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots around the world. Boingo is very attractive to people who travel a lot because their network is in so many airports. If you have a Wi-Fi enabled mobiled phone or a tablet such as the Nokia N800, their Boingo Mobile plan allows you to get access to the worldwide network for only $7.95 per month. These are the airports that have been added to Boingo’s network:

Billings International Airport (BIL); Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF); Gallatin Field Airport (BZN); Des Moines International Airport (DSM); El Paso International Airport (ELP); Bishop International Airport (FNT); Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO); Jackson Hole Airport (JAC); Juneau International Airport (JNU); Mobile Regional Airport (MOB); Monterey Peninsula Airport (MRY); Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF); Portland International Jetport (PWM); South Bend Regional Airport (SBN); Toledo Express Airport (TOL); Cherry Capital Airport (TVC); University Park Airport (UNV); Edmonton International Airport (YEG); Hamilton International Airport (YHM); Windsor Airport (YQG); Comox Valley Airport (YQQ); Regina International Airport (YQR); Thunder Bay International Airport (YQT); Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL); Abbotsford Airport (YXX) and Victoria International Airport (YYJ).
