Cablevision has expanded the coverage area of its Optimum Wi-Fi service in New Jersey to popular Shore Points and high-traffic and commercial locations in Morris, Ocean and Monmouth Counties. The company already offers Wi-Fi service in certain locations on Long Island, Connecticut and Westchester/Dutchess areas, in particular commuter rail stations. Unfortunately you have to be a Cablevision customer (i.e. someone who already subscribes to their cable service). So Cablevision’s offering is a “walled-garden Wi-Fi” service that is useless to most people. They claim that they deliver up to 3 Mbps downstream and 1.5 Mbps upstream. This “up to” language is very sneaky because if one delivers 368 Kbps, it still complies with the “up to” 3 Mbps/1.5 Mbps marketing babble.
