A friend of mine who travels a lot alerted me to Swisscom Eurospot’s insane prices for wireless access in Europe:A friend of mine who travels a lot alerted me to Swisscom Eurospot’s insane prices for wireless access in Europe:
– 30 minutes: 5.20 EUR
– day pass: 27.90 EUR
– one month: 145.60 EUR
– one year: 1079 EUR
These are the prices for pan-European access and they are slightly higher than what they charge for single country access.
Just to give you an idea of how outrageous these prices are, compare them to T-Mobile in the US:
– day pass: $10
– monthly pass: $30 – $40 per month
What accounts for the discrepancy in pricing? Do you get a bottle of champagne to go along with it when you visit a Swisscom Eurospot? Do they guarantee a good connection? Do you get a full refund if you keep getting kicked off the network? I tried to find the terms and conditions on the Swisscom Eurospot website but failed.
The reason I’m so outraged about these prices is that last year, while speaking at the 802.11-Planet Conference in Munich (Forum Hotel), I met several attendees who had paid 29.95 EUR per day to access the Swisscom Eurospot Wi-Fi service in the hotel, but could not log on. Maybe Swisscom’s service has improved but even then, I won’t fork over 1079 EUR a year to find out if this is true.
There seems to be no end to ridiculous hotspot pricing and pathetic service. Read my story on the hotspot at the KLM Business Lounge in Aruba Airport. They are charging $7 an hour for Wi-Fi access.
